GITEP SCITT provides a School Direct salaried route to QTS. This route is similar to the tuition fee route in that trainees will spend most of their time in school placements, integrating this with theoretical learning provided through centre and school-based professional studies, intensive training and practice (ITAP), and subject pathway.
The key difference to the tuition fee route is that the trainee will be directly employed by a school as an unqualified teacher and can teach up to 90% of a qualified teacher’s timetable without supervision. Schools can recruit to a vacancy by becoming the employing school for a trainee under a salaried route. The salaried route is therefore most suited to people who have prior experience working in schools or significant relevant work experience.
The employing school must cover the cost of salary and training. For many secondary subjects, there is funding available from the Department for Education to support salary and training costs.
Salaried trainees will be recruited through our Lead Partners, Balcarras and Odyssey Teaching School Hubs, but any school can offer salaried training places and schools will be directly involved with the recruitment and selection of trainees for this route.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements for this route are the same as for the tuition fee route:
- GCSEs at level 4/grade C or above in English language and maths, plus science for primary. Equivalent international qualifications may be accepted – an ENIC statement must be provided to demonstrate the comparability of the qualifications.
- A degree from a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification. If the degree was completed outside of the UK an ENIC statement must be provided to demonstrate the comparability of the qualification.
- Satisfaction of the suitability to work with children criteria as set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education.
- Satisfaction of medical fitness to train to teach criteria using the Education (Health Standards) (England) Regulations 2003
Depending on applicants’ individual circumstances, there may be other entry requirements to meet, for example completion of a subject knowledge enhancement course.
The training programme
Much of this follows the same structure as the tuition fee route. Engagement with all aspects of the programme is expected. The employing school must agree to release salaried trainees for GITEP training sessions.
- School placements – most of the time is spent in the employing school. A second school placement of 6 weeks/30 days must be completed during the year (this will be arranged by GITEP SCITT and can be completed as one block or as spread across the year). The trainee must be able to take responsibility for planning, teaching, and assessment of classes in both placements.
- School-based professional studies – 1 hr per week. Delivered in school by school-based colleagues. Curriculum planning and materials provided by GITEP SCITT.
- Two formal lesson observations and feedback conversations each week.
- Mentor meeting – 1 hour per week.
- Centre professional studies – c.10 days spread across the year. Delivered by GITEP SCITT.
- ITAP – 20 days. Delivered by GITEP SCITT. There may be flexibility for some of these days to take place within the employing school.
- Subject pathway – Thursday afternoons throughout the year. Delivered by GITEP SCITT.
Salary costs and fees
- Salaried route trainees are not eligible for student finance and bursaries. Training costs are covered by the employing school.
- Salaried trainees must be paid a minimum of Point 1 on the Unqualified Teacher pay scale according to the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document (£21,731 Sept 2024). Schools have the discretion to pay more than this, however.
- GITEP SCITT tuition fees for this route are £5500. This cost is paid by the employing school.
- PGCE is an optional element. For the Secondary PGCE with University of Bristol, the fee is set at £2500. The Primary PGCPP with University of Gloucestershire fee is £2690. This cost can be paid either by the school or self-funded by the trainee to GITEP SCITT. We will then pay the university on your behalf.
Recruitment and selection
Schools will need to inform their relevant teaching school hub that they wish to offer salaried places in particular subjects. Applications will then be opened on the Department for Education’s Find and Apply services.
Once applications are received, they will be checked for eligibility and, if they meet eligibility criteria, will be shared with schools for consideration. Interviewing and selection will be undertaken jointly between the teaching school hub recruitment team and the school. GITEP SCITT course leaders will also be involved in this process.
Once a successful candidate applicant has accepted an offer of a place, the employing school assumes responsibility for making the necessary checks and arrangements to engage the candidate as an employee of the school for the fixed-term period of one academic year. GITEP SCITT will assume responsibility for making the necessary checks and arrangements to engage the candidate on the training course.
Following completion of the training year and award of QTS, the school may choose to employ the candidate as a qualified teacher. There is no commitment to do so, however.
